Specialist book “Historical Ornament Stencils from Leipzig Stairwells,” 496 pages, hardcover, thread-sewn binding
Leipzig is considered throughout Germany to have the most significant collection of residential buildings from the Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau periods, both in terms of quality and quantity—despite decades of decay. The scarcity economy also preserved many buildings that were threatened with demolition and thus spared, keeping them in their original state. Renovations and restorations after 1990 drew public attention to buildings that had survived, in some cases, in their original condition from the time they were built. The work also brought to light extensive decorative paintings in apartments, stairwells and hallways, which were part of everyday craftsmanship more than 100 years ago.
Since 1990, Leipzig graphic designer and restorer Constanze Arndt has collected and graphically processed more than 1,500 motifs over the course of her work. This book brings together her unique collection of ornament stencils for borders and wall and ceiling designs in their original colors, spanning the period from late Neoclassicism to Art Deco. Illustrations and explanations help readers identify and contextualize them.
This book is a must-have for lovers of historic buildings, architects, painters and restorers.
